10:20-10:40 Scaling the Mobile Internet Without Breaking the Bank!

Cisco Mobile Visual Network Index (URL here) predicts that mobile data traffic will grow by 66 fold during 2008-2013, almost 64% of which is projected to be video applications. This explosion of Mobile data traffic due to nextgen mobile devices like the iPhone, netbooks, and laptops with 3G data cards / dongles is forcing Mobile Operators to address a number of challenges in their network infrastructure as well as business models. Firstly, bandwidth bottlenecks exist in backhaul networks due to existing TDM and ATM infrastructures that cannot support this traffic growth cost-effectively. Secondly, the behavior of mobile data subscribers has changed with the proliferation of these smart mobile internet devices on ever faster 3G (and soon 4G) networks. Thirdly, today’s data intensive, visual-centric applications are delivering lower “revenue per bit” than traditional mobile voice and (SMS) Text services. Mobile operators are searching for ways to better monetize their networks as they compete to expand available bandwidth to meet user demand.

In this presentation, we discuss how operators can take full advantage of intelligent IP to cost-effectively scale their infrastructure, deliver integrated user experience, and create new and profitable business models. We shall provide examples in these areas from 3G and WiMAX operators around the world and share best practices that you can apply in your business.
